Making Art Out of Math 🎨

Reader, did you know, I’m a math nerd? Through and through.

BUT, I was recently reading an article about the art of writing (because kids need to develop all these skills). It started with this brilliant quote,

“A great tragedy of the education system is its inability to make writing an appealing skill. In fact, it feels like the system has been intentionally set up to make writing an absolute slog.”

And I thought, yes. Yes!

Take that amazingly well-thought-out quote, replace “writing” with “math,” and it echoes my sentiments perfectly!

I’m a major believer in the fact that children are our future. I am here to help them grow into confident, capable, innovative, problem-solving, empathetic, and kind humans who can also do math and think mathematically when needed.

So, in an effort to help get out of the school math slog, and bring some joy back to math, here’s an activity that doesn’t feel like math:

Download these symmetric grid arts and talk about symmetry and shapes with your kid.

Or don’t even have a conversation about the math in this art!

Just let your kid – and yourself – have some fun drawing and coloring, while using mathematical concepts.

To taking the slog out of math,

Heidi

P.S. I’m left-handed. The world was not made for us lefties. I’ve created these grid arts for either lefties or righties.

Reply to this email if you love finding things that feel meant for your (or your child’s) left-handedness!

19 years in the education world taught me it's time to do math differently. I'm here to help you shake math up; everyone can do math with confidence!

When I'm not doing math, I love being outside, traveling, puzzling, gardening, and cooking.

Spending time with my pack-my 2 kids and partner- fills my cup with joy, too!

BBQ food for ketchup, mustard, and pickles

Hi Reader, BBQ season might be over for most of us, but if you know me, you know that I don’t follow the rules…especially when it comes to condiments. Case in point: I take my hot dogs with ketchup, mustard, pickles, and…lettuce. Yum! Want to know something wild? Beyond BBQ season, ketchup, mustard, and pickles can make your kiddos’ math (or any subject!) homework more fun. Here’s how: Categorize math homework like this with your kid. Ketchup: Work they need to catch up on. (Get it?!) Think:...

adventures in Japan

Hi Reader, My family recently spent time in Japan and the four of us LOVED it. Before we traveled there, I heard so many people say don’t do Japan with little kids (ours are almost 2 and almost 4). And boy was everyone wrong! Don’t let me fool you—struggles ensued—but nothing too different from when we were home. And we enjoyed some truly amazing kid-friendly stuff! Like the kid's bathrooms. In Japan, they are perfectly “mini-sized” so my 3-year-old could do everything without assistance...

Hi Reader, Who said math can’t be fun? Definitely not me. Try these Halloween jokes with your kid and see what they have to say… 👻Did you hear about the ghost who earned 18% on his math exam? He made a lot of boo-boos. 💀What is the weight of all the bones in an average human body? One skele-ton. 🎃What do you get if you divide the circumference of a jack-o-lantern by its diameter? Pumpkin pi. 🧛How many monsters are good at math? None, unless you Count Dracula! ⚰️Why was the mummy so bad at...
