What do math and a toilet stall have in common?

Hi Reader,

My family recently spent time in Japan and the four of us LOVED it. Before we traveled there, I heard so many people say don’t do Japan with little kids (ours are almost 2 and almost 4).

And boy was everyone wrong!

Don’t let me fool you—struggles ensued—but nothing too different from when we were home. And we enjoyed some truly amazing kid-friendly stuff!

Like the kid's bathrooms. In Japan, they are perfectly “mini-sized” so my 3-year-old could do everything without assistance (mini toilet, mini stalls, mini door, mini sink…you get the picture. And, if not, here’s an actual picture).

The advice I got about going to Japan with my kids reminds me of every time a kid says they “aren’t good at math” or they’re “not a math person”.

True, math might be a challenge, but when you’ve only tried to learn it in one setting (a crowded classroom with 30+ kids and 1 teacher, for example), I don’t think the kids have given themselves a fair chance.

And don’t get me started on the fact that if you haven’t mastered some math skill by the time you’re 10 it must mean that you’re destined to never learn it. In what world? Only a messed up math world, that’s where!

But back to toilets and math.

The kid bathrooms in Japan were my favorite and probably my kids’ favorite too. All of a sudden, getting my little one to go to the bathroom was easy, because the bathroom was set up for her to be successful and independent.

Reader, did you know, I’m a math nerd? Through and through. BUT, I was recently reading an article about the art of writing (because kids need to develop all these skills). It started with this brilliant quote, “A great tragedy of the education system is its inability to make writing an appealing skill. In fact, it feels like the system has been intentionally set up to make writing an absolute slog.” And I thought, yes. Yes! Take that amazingly well-thought-out quote, replace “writing” with...

BBQ food for ketchup, mustard, and pickles

Hi Reader, BBQ season might be over for most of us, but if you know me, you know that I don’t follow the rules…especially when it comes to condiments. Case in point: I take my hot dogs with ketchup, mustard, pickles, and…lettuce. Yum! Want to know something wild? Beyond BBQ season, ketchup, mustard, and pickles can make your kiddos’ math (or any subject!) homework more fun. Here’s how: Categorize math homework like this with your kid.
