Great Summer Math Week 3: War Heads

Hi Reader,

It's a wonderful summer to do math!

This week you are going to be doing War Heads.

It's a tribute to the old card game war that you might have played when you were younger.

Low Prep:
🖍️ You need some numbered cards or pieces of paper (1-10 is good)

🖍️ 3 People

This super quick and easy setup game is such a blast. We literally had about 5 minutes to get a quick game in with some shots for the video and everyone got a great laugh and a great math review from it.

If you're competitive (**me**) or just here for a ton of fun, you're in luck!

Click below to see who was the quickest with their math facts, and who *gasp* cheated!

If you're not in a place to watch this one (though it's worth it to see who tries to cheat!), here's a quick summary of the set up and rules.

To making math memories that last,

Heidi

Hi, I'm Heidi!

18 years in the education world taught me it's time to do math differently. I'm here to help you shake math up; everyone can do math with confidence!

When I'm not doing math, I love doing anything outside, traveling, puzzling, gardening, and cooking.

Spending time with my pack-my 2 kids and partner- fills my cup with joy, too!

Reader, did you know, I’m a math nerd? Through and through. BUT, I was recently reading an article about the art of writing (because kids need to develop all these skills). It started with this brilliant quote, “A great tragedy of the education system is its inability to make writing an appealing skill. In fact, it feels like the system has been intentionally set up to make writing an absolute slog.” And I thought, yes. Yes! Take that amazingly well-thought-out quote, replace “writing” with...

BBQ food for ketchup, mustard, and pickles

Hi Reader, BBQ season might be over for most of us, but if you know me, you know that I don’t follow the rules…especially when it comes to condiments. Case in point: I take my hot dogs with ketchup, mustard, pickles, and…lettuce. Yum! Want to know something wild? Beyond BBQ season, ketchup, mustard, and pickles can make your kiddos’ math (or any subject!) homework more fun. Here’s how: Categorize math homework like this with your kid. Ketchup: Work they need to catch up on. (Get it?!) Think:...

adventures in Japan

Hi Reader, My family recently spent time in Japan and the four of us LOVED it. Before we traveled there, I heard so many people say don’t do Japan with little kids (ours are almost 2 and almost 4). And boy was everyone wrong! Don’t let me fool you—struggles ensued—but nothing too different from when we were home. And we enjoyed some truly amazing kid-friendly stuff! Like the kid's bathrooms. In Japan, they are perfectly “mini-sized” so my 3-year-old could do everything without assistance...
